Understanding soil conditions is one of the biggest factors in making good spring decisions.

That’s why Red Cedar Ag is tracking weekly soil temperatures across Northwest Wisconsin to help growers better understand how the season is progressing.

Using Soiltech wireless thermometers , we are monitoring soil temperatures from April through May.

Each day we track temperatures at:

8:00 AM (typically the coldest soil temperature of the day)
5:00 PM (typically the warmest soil temperature of the day)

Every Friday, we will post updated results so you can follow how soil temperatures are changing underground as planting season approaches.

What AMF Levels Can Tell You About Your Soil Health

When we talk about soil health, most conversations focus on nutrients like N, P, and K. But soil biology also plays a major role in how efficiently your crop can access those nutrients. One important biological measurement included in EarthOptics testing is arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) .

Why AMF Matters

What We’re Seeing

Every season, growers deal with hidden yield threats that don’t always show up until harvest. One of those threats is Gibberella stalk rot — a disease that can quietly reduce standability and increase harvest losses if not managed early.

Using EarthOptics data and field observations, Red Cedar Ag continues to monitor disease pressure across our area to help growers better understand their risk.

Why Gibberella Stalk Rot Matters

Gibberella is one of the major stalk rots of corn and is responsible for hundreds of millions of dollars in losses each year across the Midwest.

Yield loss can occur because the plant struggles to move nutrients during grain fill, but the biggest concern is often lodging caused by weakened stalk strength. When stalks fail, harvest efficiency drops and losses can increase quickly.

What We’re Seeing

Based on observations across 17,766 acres , we are continuing to see Gibberella present at varying risk levels.

2024:

33.9% High Risk
28.3% Moderate Risk
37.8% Low Risk

2025:

31.4% High Risk
24.9% Moderate Risk
43.8% Low Risk

While risk levels vary year to year, Gibberella continues to be something growers should consider when planning for harvest and future management decisions.

Originally from the Blue Hills of Rice Lake, WI, Derek studied Soil Science at UW–Stevens Point, where he developed a passion for the science, complexity, and work ethic that drive agriculture. He comes to RCA from AgGrow Solutions in Custer, WI, serving growers across the Central Sands with a focus on practical recommendations that perform in the field.

Derek is excited to be part of RCA because of the team’s innovative mindset and commitment to making management and product placement decisions grounded in solid data, always aiming to deliver the best ROI for the grower.
